Special Event Volunteer Needs

Volunteer Application

Friendly House is partnering with The August Wilson Red Door Project to present 2 free performances of “Hands Up,” a series of brilliantly acted monologues written by 7 African American playwrights and commissioned in the wake of police shootings of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO and many others.  Each performance is followed by a “talk back” with Kevin Jones and Lesli Mones, the founders of The Red Door Project, whose mission is to change the racial ecology in Portland through the arts.  Audience members have described these discussions as “transformative,” “unforgettable” and “necessary.”  In one of the whitest cities in America, “Hands Up” offers audiences both an intimate and immediate immersion into the culture of institutionalized profiling and a safe, much needed catalyst to conversations around race. By promoting understanding and conversation around the difficult topic of race, we are inviting people to be a part of preparing the ground for the growth of racial equity in Portland. Here is a link to the online Greater Giving campaign that we are currently holding that includes more details about the performances: https://friendlyhouseinc.ejoinme.org/handsup

We are looking for people to help with setup/clean up, ushering and snacks/beverage sales for each performance.  Performances are suitable for high school aged  and above.
