One-time volunteering can be both rewarding and challenging. Volunteers catch a glimpse of the daily functions of an active social service agency, and may also get to work with some of the people we serve. These projects do not normally require any skills or previous knowledge of the service areas.
Volunteer groups play a vital role in our work, bringing energy, teamwork and efficiency to projects and events where time matters. We are happy to host volunteer groups for currently planned volunteer events, or we can work with you to come up with a team service project that is fun and rewarding for your group.
Reliability & Commitment
In many circumstances our clients, (children, seniors or families) are best served via on-going relationships with volunteers. Some behind-the-scenes projects also need the attention of a volunteer who can see the project through from beginning to end. Reliability and commitment can lead to greater responsibility and a more in-depth & personally rewarding volunteer experience

A neighbor helping neighbor philosophy has been a strong tradition at Friendly House since our founding as a settlement house in 1930. We achieve our goals by recruiting and coordinating community members to assist staff by working directly with children, seniors and families and by helping at special events. Currently we have over 950 individual and group volunteers who contribute thousands of hours of service each year.
We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities to which you can contribute your time and talents through direct service or behind-the-scenes work; seasonal or ongoing; short- or long-term. Individuals and groups are welcome. Talk to our volunteer coordinator today to find a way of getting involved that works for you!
Recent volunteer groups include SELCO Community Credit Union, Volunteer Vixens, Wells Fargo, PSU, OnPoint, PCC, Nike, Bank of America and Con-way.
“I had my first visit today with a senior. The gentleman needing help was just delightful! It was so great to be able to help this lovely man out, and I look forward to meeting with him again.” –a new Friendly Visitor volunteer
“I just wanted to say a word about how much I appreciate my volunteer. He has been helping me with my yard work for several months and I can’t begin to tell you how helpful he has been. Besides being an incredibly hard worker, he is simply a very nice guy. We seem to have clicked since we first met and I have enjoyed each time he has been able to help me with my yard work. There is no way I could accomplish what needs to get done without help. I have to say this is a perfect match and has taken so much pressure off my shoulders.
Thank you Friendly House for providing this service and thank you to my volunteer!” — David Sherrif, Friendly House SAGE Program member
